VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA 4th of JULY PARADE!!
March for Safer Streets

What?

Did you know? In Sunland-Tujunga, there have been 14 deaths just on Foothill Boulevard since 2016, 4 occurring in the month of April 2018 alone.
It’s time to stand up and get the people of Sunland-Tujunga to acknowledge those who have died and take steps to make Foothill safer.
We are looking for volunteers to march for safer streets in the 4th of July parade!

Where?

Parade staging will occur between Summitrose Street and Mt. Gleason Sunland-Tujunga, CA

When?

Wednesday, July 4th, 2018
Parade staging will occur between 8am-9am
The route will be 1.2 miles along Foothill Blvd., finishing at 11am at Sunland Recreation Center.

We need people representing all forms of transportation — cyclists walking with their bikes, people with skateboards, disabled in wheelchairs, kids in strollers … and, especially, those who have lost someone to or experienced injury from a traffic collision. Support the League: Autonomous Vehicles are coming

Perhaps no new technology is more hotly debated in transportation circles than autonomous vehicles. Whether you envision a future of 100% legally compliant, error-free driving or a dystopia of distant commutes and no place for bikes, autonomous vehicles are coming. In several places, they’re already here!

While the League supports the development of this technology and agrees that it has the potential to greatly reduce the traffic injuries and fatalities attributed to distracted driving, speeding and other behaviors, we also believe that these vehicles must meet some basic safety standards before being deployed on our streets.

This is why the League has called for a standardized performance test, or “vision test,” that measures an automated vehicle’s ability to recognize and respond to vulnerable road users, including bicyclists and pedestrians.

Simply put, we need your help to build awareness and momentum of the safety implications of Autonomous Vehicles before it’s too late. Please consider supporting work at the National level by donating today, and contact your Senators to demand a vision test for this new technology.

Parks and Recreation Master Plan Update: Airport2Park!

The City of Santa Monica is updating the 20 year Parks and Recreation Master Plan and has been hosting meetings with the community throughout the summer. The last planned event is this Sunday at the Summer SOULstice Festival – 11am to 1pm.

We encourage you to share your input via the online survey that will be ending soon! This is a great opportunity for all of us to give input and to reinforce community support for more open space and to replace Santa Monica Airport with a Great Park when it closes in 2029.

What kind of park do you want to replace the airport? Let the City know! Miles of protected bike and pedestrian paths? A Bike Campus with public bike repair facilities — a BMX track? How about coffee and snack concessions for people walking, biking and enjoying the park?

The online survey that will take 5-10 minutes and will ask you to drop pins on a map for your favorite beach and park and give feedback about existing recreational programs. Near the end of the survey you will be asked about LOOKING TO THE FUTURE. This will be your opportunity to drop a blue pin to focus on the Airport and put your ideas for a GREAT PARK!

April Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Thousands have died in vehicle crashes because drivers are distracted by cell phone conversations, emails, text messages and social media. Do not become a statistic. Here are some tips to keep your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel and your mind on the drive.

  • First and foremost, turn off your cell phone. Put it in the glove compartment, in your purse or in your trunk. There is no safe way to make a call while driving – not even hands-free.
  • Send and read text messages and emails before you start driving.
  • If you’re going on a longer drive, schedule breaks to stop, park safely, and respond to messages.
  • Using voice features in your car’s infotainment system is also distracting. Take care of communications before you start driving.
  • Know where you’re going before you put the car in “drive.” Put your destination into your GPS so you do not need to touch it while the car is moving.
  • Social media can wait. No update, tweet or video is worth a life.
  • Park in a safe area if you must take a call, return a text or check email.

Do not call or text friends or family if you know they are driving.

Distracted driving is an epidemic.

Our Earth Day theme this year is Dr Seuss’ The Lorax. The Lorax was Dr. Seuss‘ personal favorite of his children’s book. It chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, who speaks for the trees against the Once-ler. As in most Dr. Seuss works, most of the creatures mentioned are original to the book.
What costume will you dream up?

The book is commonly recognized as a fable and a story Dr Seuss was able to create addressing economic and environmental issues without it being dull. “The Lorax,” he once explained, “came out of me being angry. In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are evil things and let the chips fall where they might.”
