May is Bicycle Month

May 7th, Santa Monica Festival

To kick it off we had a great day at the Santa Monica Festival with a Bicycle Exhibition.  We had 33 bikes along with assor

ted accessories to illustrate the wonderful variety and versatility of the bicycle.  We had cargo bikes and folding bikes, and almost everything in between.  We had bags, baskets and panniers along with trailers for kids and cargo. We’ll have some pictures up to show you soon.

I’d like to take a minute to give a very special thanks to all who participated and contributed to making this event such a success.

Thanks to our Spoke committee members who brought the bikes to the show and volunteered their time- with a special thanks to Barbara Filet, Kent Strumpell, Gary Kavanagh and Bryan Beretta who along with me spent the entire day there talking about bikes and the cities upcoming Bicycle Action Plan while answering questions and providing information to festival attendees. It was a long day but we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

To Steven Carre from Bike Effect who gave a great talk on Bike Fit to a captured audience.

To our friends at the local bike shops, Bike Effect, Cynergy and Helen’s Cycles who lent us bikes.  Thank you for your support!!  You all truly help make this event great.

Thank you Colleen, Gilbert and Steve for letting us display your bikes once you arrived at the festival.

And to Asuka and Lumo thank you so much for your help shuffling bikes to and from the festival – it was such a help!!!

Santa Monica Festival, May 7th – Bike Exhibition

This year’s festival has a special emphasis on bikes, bikers and bicycle culture

Santa Monica Festival celebrates it’s 20th Anniversary at Clover Park this Saturday, May 7th from 11am to 6pm.  It gives us great pleasure to report that “Bikes” will play a large roll in the festivities this year.  Santa Monica Spoke is excited to be participating by putting on a “Bike Exhibition”.  The concept will demonstrate the wonderful versatility of the bicycle and how it can enhance our lives as a healthy, sustainable part of our city and the environment.  We will demonstrate the adaptability of bicycles and how bicycles can be more than just for pleasure – they can get us to work or school, go shopping, get groceries, run errands, and take us on terrific adventures from cruising in the sun to bike touring destinations near and far.

We will have a large variety of bicycles on display from standard cruisers, mountain bikes and road bikes to the newly popular cargo bikes and folding bikes.  We will have trailers for hauling all kinds of cargo from your children and pets to trips to your local farmers market, weekly groceries and weekend shopping sprees.  We will also have some nice vintage bikes on display as well, still ready for daily use.

Bikes on display are courtesy of Santa Monica Spoke, along with generous help from local bike shops.

Santa Monica Spoke will also be hosting a special guest, Steven Carre – fit expert from Bike Effect who will give a talk on how to “fit your bike” and be there to answer questions about bike fit, saddle choices, shoes, what size bike is right for you.  Steven is scheduled to be with us from 1 – 3 pm.  He will give an informational talk about the importance of a proper bike fit at 1:00pm and be there afterwards to answer your questions.

Have a bike collecting dust in a corner somewhere?  Get it out and bring it down; the folks at Bikrowave will be there to help you get that bike back on the road.  You can learn to “do-it yourself” bicycle repair, get maintenance advice and safe riding tips.  The City of Santa Monica’s Planning and Community Development Bike Learning Area will be there for you to practice defensive riding techniques and how to ride safely in the street.  The Santa Monica Museum of Art presents “Ticket to Ride” for you to track your trek by filling in a scrapbook preloaded with inspiring bike quotes, illustrations, cycling tips and rules of the road.

Ride your bike to the festival, Free Bike Valet will be provided by the City of Santa Monica.

We look forward to you visiting our exhibition and talking with you about bicycling in Santa Monica and the city’s progress on the Bike Action Plan.
