Come and join us to experience a 1-day demonstration event at the intersection of Pico Blvd and Urban Ave for the East Pico Safety Project on May 18, 2024 from 9 am to 1 pm. The City of Santa Monica is hosting a 1-day demonstration event for the community to provide input on temporary street designs. The event is designed to gather input on the temporary street designs.

This project is a part of Santa Monica’s commitment to promote sustainable transportation and make walking safe and convenient for all ages and abilities. The 1-day demonstration will allow community members to experience temporary street designs firsthand and offer feedback, ensuring the long-term improvements align with the community’s needs and vision. 

Come and experience the temporary public space and pedestrian enhancements that use colorful and durable materials known as the Go Human Kit of Parts: 

• Parklets provide curbside seating for more space to eat, relax, and hang out.
• Artistic Crosswalks help create a unique sense of place and city identity.
• Bulb-outs or Curb Extensions make crossing the street shorter and easier.

The 1-day demonstration event will only feature these temporary street designs at Pico Blvd and Urban Ave, although the East Pico Safety Project will explore improvements to maximize pedestrian safety on Pico Boulevard between 27th Street and Centinela Avenue.  The reason this corridor is being considered is because Santa Monica’s Local Roadway Safety Plan identified East Pico Boulevard as among the 14% of roadways that account for 50% of the fatal and severe traffic collisions in the City. 

The City is partnering with the Southern California Association of Governments Go Human campaign as part of a grant fund for this event.
