August 7 @ 5:30 pm8:00 pm

Without people there is no unity or community! For this year’s National Night Out, the Santa Monica Police Department is inviting everyone, from every corner of the City, to one dynamic location! Plan to join us at Ken Genser Square on Tuesday, August 7th to celebrate police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and the diversity that makes Santa Monica such a great place to live.

Bring your appetite. Local food truck favorites will be on hand providing tasty fares at a reduced rate. Bring energy to take part in the Unity Art Project where we will “build a canopy of interconnectedness so thick it will be hard to see the sky”! Bring your pride for the community you live in and create your very own “Santa Monica Rocks!” project. Above all else, bring yourself, family and friends to celebrate diversity and togetherness with SMPD and those around you.

Let’s come together and UNITE the City!

Bike it! Walk it! Bus it! Week: May 7th-11th, Santa Monica

The City of Santa Monica’s semi-annual Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! week encourages kids to be active, by getting to school using alternative modes of transportation.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District Elementary and Middle Schools will be celebrating Bike It! Walk It! Bus It! week between May 7thand 11th! Bike It Walk It is a community institution in Santa Monica that encourages families to try walking, bicycling, skateboarding and scootering to school. Students from the Santa Monica High School Solar Alliance hosted the inaugural event in 2007, and since then it has expanded to every school in the District.

The Safe Routes to School program is a partnership between the City of Santa Monica, the District, Santa Monica Spoke and the Parent Teacher Association to reduce traffic congestion near schools and promote health, safety, environmental, and community benefits. The Bike It! Walk It! effort supports community engagement through this environmentally friendly program.  Please join SMMUSD as we bike, bus, scoot, skate, and walk to school!

The Lorax was Dr. Seuss‘ personal favorite of his children’s book. It chronicles the plight of the environment and the Lorax, who speaks for the trees against the Once-ler. As in most Dr. Seuss works, most of the creatures mentioned are original to the book. What costume will you dream up?

The book is commonly recognized as a fable and a story Dr Seuss was able to create addressing economic and environmental issues without it being dull. “The Lorax,” he once explained, “came out of me being angry. In The Lorax I was out to attack what I think are evil things and let the chips fall where they might.”
