Meatless in March: Join us!

Happy March! Join us as we celebrate Meatless in March by incorporating more plant-rich meals into your lifestyle. The more meals the greater reduction in your carbon foodprint. Meatless in March is a City of Santa Monica campaign to encourage individuals to reduce their meat consumption in an effort to reduce their carbon foodprint and improve health. To learn the importance of reducing one’s meat consumption,

Why?

The Meatless in March Pledge encourages residents and businesses to incorporate more plant-rich meals into daily practice. By incentivizing participants during the month of March, the hope is to raise awareness and grow the movement toward plant-rich foods.  As a city that is driving toward carbon neutrality and a city of wellbeing, it is important to emphasize a plant-rich diet and reducing one’s foodprint.

Meatless in March is part of Santa Monica’s commitment to sustainable food. The City of Santa Monica promotes awareness about the effects of food choices on climate change. In addition to reducing meat and dairy consumption, we also promote eating organic, buying local and locally grown, avoiding processed foods, and minimize packaging and food waste.

Meatless in March also creates a dialogue around sustainable food. As we look at the impacts of one’s behaviors, we begin to look at how we can create more sustainable food systems for our community.

Survey: Who rides for transportation?

And what should that mean to local businesses?

Bike mean business and those who ride benefit local economies. Locally, for every $10 spent at a Santa Monica business, as much as $7 stays in the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditure (Civic Economics, 2008). People riding bikes shop local, but do our local business know this?

A project called Pedal Perks is looking to build a platform that encourages mutual support between local business and people who ride bikes. We all know the shops we love, but do these shops know who is arriving to their location by bicycle?  We invite you to take the attached survey to help local businesses learn who we are as cycling consumers.

Click the image to take the survey

The goal is to introduce local retailers to everyday consumers who also like to move around town by bike. This data will allow Pedal Perks to determine the best products and services to offer the cycling community from local businesses.

The survey will be a success if:

  • There is a better picture of who cyclists are
  • It is clear where the platform should be launched first
  • We develop a sense of the type of businesses riders want to be supported by and you want to support

Thanks in advance for your participation!
