The Santa Monica Police Department needs to recognize bicycle theft as a real and serious crime. Hundreds of bicycles are stolen and reported to the SMPD with no resolution. Locked bicycles are stolen daily throughout downtown Santa Monica and it’s suburbs. It’s clear the SMPD puts bike theft on it’s back burner. Before Santa Monica becomes a successful biking city, the Police Department needs to recognize bicycle thefts as serious and punishable and aggressively pursue these real crimes. Until then bicycles will continue to be stolen and riders will be discouraged from riding in this city.
